Three dead in crash in Glenwood Canyon

GARFIELD COUNTY - Three people died Sunday morning after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 70 near milepost 129 in Glenwood Canyon.

The crash happened in a construction zone, so it shut down both eastbound and westbound traffic for about four hours. The location of the crash was about 13 miles east of Glenwood Springs.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., a 2006 Audi was traveling eastbound on I-70 in the westbound lane, and a King Soopers semi-truck was traveling westbound in the westbound lane when the vehicles collided head-on. There were three occupants in the Audi. The driver was identified as Brianda Zavala, a 17-year-old from Glenwood Springs. She was wearing her seatbelt, police said. The two passengers were identified as Jennifer Nevarez, a 16-year-old from Carbondale, and Albino Ortiz-Monge, 24, of Gypsum, both of whom were sitting in the back seat but were not wearing seatbelts, according to State Patrol. All three occupants died on scene as a result of their injuries.

The driver of the semi-truck was identified as Peter Zhuchok, a 54-year-old male from Aurora. He was uninjured in the crash and the only occupant of the vehicle. The roads were wet at the time of the crash, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation, State Patrol said.

Road construction in Glenwood Canyon has shifted all I-70 eastbound traffic into the normal westbound travel lanes, creating one eastbound lane of traffic and one westbound lane of traffic. The construction zone continues over a six-mile stretch of Glenwood Canyon. During the closure, westbound traffic was diverted at Dotsero and eastbound traffic was diverted at Glenwood Springs.

The Eagle County Sheriff's Office, the Garfield County Coroner's Office, the Gypsum Fire Department, the Eagle County Ambulance District and the Colorado Department of Transportation responded to the scene with the Colorado State Patrol.
