Vail Daily letter: In memoriam for Susan Leigh Sawyer Zastrow

We first met Sue Leigh Sawyer Zastrow when she and Ron rang our door bell and announced that they would be our next-door neighbors, having just purchased the west unit of our duplex. That was 32 years ago, and a world of living has occurred since.

The Zastrow children - Kristin, Ryan and Leigh - and our three daughters grew up through these years. Ron and Sue hosted several of the Fourth of July barbecues in the cul-de-sac. The food and music from the flat-bed truck were the main features of these block parties and were enjoyed by many.

Following the CU Buffaloes was a blast, including the party with CU beating Notre Dame for the 1990 NCAA national championship.

Sue had a green thumb, and her rock garden was a masterpiece. She would always be on the deck watering her beautiful flowers or rearranging the fire wood.

During all of these years, we had common concerns about the maintenance of the duplex. When we needed new blacktop, a new roof or a fresh coat of paint, Sue and I were in complete unison. Not only did we agree on what had to be done, but we agreed to the exact color and the specific materials to be used. She was a joy to work with on all of such projects.

Sue was devoted to all of her children and grandchildren. The Zastrow family trips to Lake Powell were events that she enjoyed and we looked forward to hearing about every trip. The floating trampoline, boats and campfires were memorable events in her life.

She was a dedicated and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful person and a great friend of ours. It would not be possible to have had a better neighbor.

We are going to miss Sue. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zastrow family. May Sue rest in peace and may her memory be eternal.
