The Route 6 Cafe in Eagle-Vail has always been a great place for breakfast and lunch where you could enjoy a triple play of eggs, bacon and breakfast potatoes. What you might not know is that it is a great place for music on Sunday nights featuring another triple play in the form of a musical trio: Don Watson, Beth Swearingen and Dave Andersen. So while extras in the morning fare may include grits and sausage on the side, in the evening, they might consist of a Beatles' medley and an Italian song "Con Te Partiro."
Our trio's musical kitchen goes way back in time. The old Club Chelsea in Vail Village is where we first saw these entertainers mix their ingredients. Then it was at Sonnenalp's King's Club, where they added a sauce of flair and distinction. Now we find their latest entrees, so tasty to the acoustic palate, at a place far away but so close by. Here, at the Route 6 Cafe, we can sit back, relax and continue to enjoy morsels of opera, ballad and songs of yesteryear.
The Route 6 Cafe moved last year from its original location in a former gas station, just down the road. The owner, Ollie Holdstock, successfully transitioned the restaurant from one site to the other, relying on friends and associates to transport unique collectibles while building out the space formerly occupied by Paddy's. The diner's new incarnation goes beyond the original and includes evening meals and entertainment featuring our trio, the members of which have interesting backgrounds. Watson comes from a family with roots in vaudeville. Swearingen's is musical theater. And Andersen, on the mandolin, says he was raised by "a pack of wolves." They have all become musical legends in the valley during the years.
Go there and watch these singers share their magical menu with an encouraging audience. A recipe of good food, atmosphere and fun entertainment will serve as your ultimate dish.
