Eagle Valley track sweeps at Fruita Monument

We're not just rerunning the same story every week.

Eagle Valley track and field won again. This time, it was at Friday's Wertman Invitational in Fruita.

Cool stuff of note is that Devils medley team set a new school record. Hunter Burnham, and Dominic Patterson had personal records in the 800 meters, as did the boys' 800 and 3,200 teams. Michelle Carbajal is also still pretty good in the triple jump. She had a season best.

Did we mention Eagle Valley's on spring break and not at full strength?

"We're still getting there," Devils coach Jeff Shroll said. "We're looking at two big pictures. We want to win the league meet and we want to move on to the weekend after."

That would be state. Shroll said that going into this weekend, Eagle Valley had athletes in the state-qualifying 18 in 17 different events. That doesn't mean that the Devils should get comfortable, by any means, but Eagle Valley hasn't been in this position in a while.

The Huskies spent the week trying to find a meet. Their date at Loveland Friday was snowed out. Coach Rob Parish worked the phones and got his athletes into the Dakota Ridge Invite.

"It was a scramble all week with the weather," he said. "Then we had an abbreviated group out there (because of spring break). We're so close to the end of the season. We've got three weeks until the league meet. We needed everyone to stay engaged."

And Dakota Ridge was an opportunity for Parish to see some other athletes. There were a lot of new names in the results this week.

Vail Christian was out at the Kiowa Classic. Taylor Alexander seems to be doing a nice imitation of alumna Ashlyn Gruber, but in the sprints. And, with regard to the Saints, please keep in mind that Mack Cooper was playing the lead in "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," the school play this weekend. The state qualifier is expected back when Vail Christian heads to West Grand next week.

Eagle Valley is at Montrose, while Battle Mountain heads back to the Front Range for the Liberty Bell.
