Huskies girls lax beats Eagle Valley

GYPSUM - The firsts keep piling up for Battle Mountain girls lacrosse.

With a 19-2 victory over Eagle Valley Thursday down in Gypsum, the Huskies recorded their first season sweep of their archrivals. The Devils won last year's grudge match two games to one.

"I think it definitely signifies the improvement this team has made last season and this season," Huskies coach Emily Jaissle said. "The girls know each other. It's a friendly rivalry. The girls are happy to compete."

Battle Mountain had nine different goal-scorers, which is always a good thing. Scoring diversity is just one of the things that the Huskies (8-3) are working on as the regular season winds down.

"I think attack-wise, we want to make smarter decisions in passing and shooting," Jaissle said. "We want everything to be calculated and well-thought out. Defensively, we're working on more communication and protecting that space in front of the goal."

As the wins pile up - Thursday was four in a row - the Huskies are putting themselves into the playoff picture. Wins against at Fruita Wednesday and against Grand Junction in Edwards Friday assure the Huskies of no worse than a second-place finish in the Mountain Conference.

The question is, then, will that be enough to secure a state-playoff spot for the first time in the program's history? CHSAA girls lacrosse is still just one 46-team division, whereas the boys have split into Classes 5A and 4A. Only the Mountain Conference's champion is assured a spot in the field.

Will CHSAA take another team from the Mountain Conference?

"I don't know," Jaissle said. "It's a tough call because we get less exposure than team's on the Front Range. It's hard to say."

That makes Monday's nonconference tilt at Conifer all the more important. It's an opportunity to show the Front Range what this much-improved Huskies team can do.
