VAIL — Attendees can start the day at 10 a.m. in the ballroom of Vail Marriott Mountain Resort for an olive oil seminar. As a follow up to last year’s Exploration of Olive Oil seminar, Steve Lewis, founder of Giuliana Imports, will offer Olive Oil 201 — an exploration of extra virgin olive oil.
Often times its limited shelf life makes extra virgin olive oil a challenge to work with, however with Lewis’ expertise, he can demonstrate creative pairings and uses. Participants will learn regional differences and have the opportunity to sample extra virgin olive oil varietals from Italy, Greece and France.
ENJOY THE MOUNTAINTOP PICNIC
Friday also includes the Taste of Vail’s Mountaintop Picnic from 12 to 2:30 p.m. This signature event features a small army of highly acclaimed vintners and the Vail Valley’s most prominent chefs serving up a gourmet feast.
The picnic takes place at 10,350 feet above sea level and food and wine are showcased in a specially built snow fort, which provides one of the most unique event venues in the high country. Guests can access the Mountaintop Picnic via the Eagle Bahn Gondola out of Lionshead or by skiing to Eagle’s Nest. Tickets are available for $135 per person.
LEARN ABOUT BEER AND CHEESE
Guests can finish the day by challenging their palates and increasing their knowledge of beer and cheese — two very common indulgences with a rich history and almost endless pairing options. Certified cicerone and beer sommelier Michael Kelley will take participants on an educational journey through beer and cheese with the intention of educating in a vibrant atmosphere.
Kelley will be joined by the cheese peddler Amy Combs to further explore the relationship between beer and cheese. As an added bonus, guests will receive a set of glassware at the end of the seminar.
A number of restaurants also are hosting winemaker dinners this evening. A complete list of dinners and activities are available at www.tasteofvail.com.
