Get your vinyl at Record Store Day in Minturn

MINTURN — Closing day for the mountain is upon us once again, which also coincides with an ever-growing annual event for music and vinyl lovers across the U.S. called Record Store Day. Held on the 3rd Saturday of April, it is celebrated in small “mom and pop stores” Coast to Coast. No big chains are allowed.

Available to stores participating are hundreds of highly collectible limited edition vinyl pieces — colored records, picture records, shaped records, and of course, the standard black records. They come in 7 inch, 10 inch, and 12 inch formats, and consist of titles from small indie bands to classic rock, and even peeks at a few songs from upcoming major releases.

In order to participate, the retailer must sign a contract stating that they won’t sell items early, online, hold anything for anyone, or sell more than one copy of anything to one person. Only then can retailers participate as an official RSD store.

Locally, Eagle Valley Music & Comics in Minturn is participating again this year, as they have since the first RSD, seven years ago. Having been around in various locations for the last 30 plus years, they are now in their permanent home on Main Street.

“This year will be the biggest RSD ever, and we have a massive amount of vinyl for RSD,” said owner Tom Robbins. “We’ve beefed up the number of copies when possible, as the labels allotted us on some pieces. A couple items will probably arrive late, like the Pantera/Poison Idea 7 inch, but we’ve got ... hundreds of other titles”.

Artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, LCD Soundsystem, Bruce Springsteen, MGMT, Conor Oberst, a mystery 7 inch and many more will have releases available. A list of titles, most of which Eagle Valley Music & Comics will be carrying is available online at www.recordstoreday.com. There will be some giveaways and CD samplers available at the store as well.

The store opens at 10 a.m., and the early bird will get the record, rather than the worm in this case. The store is located at 211 Main Street in Minturn, right next to The Scarab. They can be reached by phone at 970-476-1713 for any questions or to ask if any copies of a certain piece is still in stock. Hours are from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., but will remain open later, until 10 p.m., if it’s still busy, so call after 8 p.m. Remember, nothing can be held, so beat feet to the store early for your shot at some highly sought after collectible vinyl.
