EAGLE — Derby skaters from the West come together May 17 in Eagle for Melee in the Mountains, a round-robin mix-up tournament. Spectators and fans will gear up for an event that includes two qualifying bouts, a co-ed bout and a championship full-spectacle face-off. One team of skaters will claim victory and lead the entourage of Melee fans to the event after-party.
About the event
Doors open at 12:15 p.m, and tickets are $10 at the door. Students and seniors are $5 and children younger than 5 and members of the military are free. Lunch offerings from Heidi’s Deli will be available to purchase, and Bonfire Brewery will sell beer.
The roller derby action begins at 12:45 p.m. Skaters of all ability levels mix-up on four teams and compete for a chance to stand victorious and be seated in the championship bout. Spectators and participants can visit the silent auction during event half-time and enjoy baked goods made by the 10th Mountain Roller Dolls.
The co-ed competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Women will hit the track and mix-up with men to offer a full-contact mindset of skill and strategy.
Roller derby is a sport where adjustments are not made for females to participate — there are no recommendations for resizing the track like those for lowering the hoop in women’s basketball. The track is the track and the rules are the rules. The competitive drive and skilled maneuvers of these skaters will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Set to begin at 6 p.m., the championship event brings some serious competition and will have fans cheering. This is a full bout, with two 30-minute periods featuring half-time entertainment and contests.
Talented skaters will match-up here, determined to chalk up points and steer clear of the penalty box. The melee continues into the evening and the event after-party takes place at The Back Bowl of Eagle. For more information, visit www.10thmountainroller dolls.com.
