VAIL — Anjali restorative yoga is refreshment for the brain. Free from the emphasis on sweating and exertion often associated with other yoga styles, Anjali restorative yoga is a healing modality. The Vail Vitality Center will offer a very special Anjali restorative yoga session with teacher-in-training Ellen Miller on Friday from 4 to 5:15 p.m.
Based in Vail, Miller is well known across the globe as an outdoor fitness and endurance coach. She also believes strongly in balance and replenishment for hard-working, hard-playing mountain athlete bodies. As strongly as she advocates exercise, she also is adamant about proper rest, which promotes optimum vitality, both physical and mental.
“As an endurance coach and former competitive athlete, I understand the importance and value of proper rest and recovery,” said Miller. “As every good athlete knows, smart training is the first half of the equation, and restful recovery and restorative sleep are the other half to produce positive results. I am drawn to study, teach and share Anjali restorative yoga because I find that it is a beautiful method to support our bodies (and minds). I am honored to hold space for active mountain people and to offer them a way to nourish and nurture themselves.”
Anjali restorative yoga is a practice of deep, meditative support where the practitioner is held by bolsters and blankets for sustained periods. The practice is centered on the spinal series of nine supported poses using nourishing visualizations and meditations intended to replace feelings of lack, anxiety and depression with thoughts of peace, fulfillment and abundance. The stories, images and meditations used are a deliberate tool to replace the constant chatter of worry and hurry that is so common in society today.
It also is a results-oriented practice; the sequence of poses was created with an understanding of how posture affects breath and how breath dominates cortisol levels in the body that can lead to many ailments, including stress and anxiety.
