Locals heading to Super Bowl 50

Karen Conklin and her husband, Steve, are Broncos season ticket holders from Eagle. The Conklins were at Super Bowl 50, watching the Broncos hoist the trophy, and now members of the team, cheerleaders and the mascot will be stopping in Eagle on May 13 as part of a tour for fans.

EAGLE COUNTY — Sunday is the final football game of the season (wipe away that tear), and what better place to cheer on the Broncos against the Carolina Panthers than in Levi’s Stadium, home of Super Bowl 50?

While Eagle County is united in orange, some locals are heading to San Francisco this weekend to partake in the Super Bowl festivities.

“It’s kind of like a dream trip,” said Karl Berger, of Eagle-Vail.

Berger, who has had season tickets to the Broncos for 31 years, scored some tickets from a friend who knew someone selling extras. He boarded a private plane Friday with a group of six, headed for a private golf course and an invite-only party downtown featuring Future.

“Everybody’s kind of poo-pooing the Broncos, but two years ago, the No. 1 offense went up against the No. 1 defense, and we all know what happened then.”Karl BergerEagle-Vail

“I’m looking forward to watching Manning hoist that trophy,” he said, “and wearing some Versace pants on the plane.”

Lisa Venz teaches Spanish and Eagle County Charter Academy and headed to San Francisco on Friday. She’s looking forward to the VIP experience, as she is going thanks to an old high school friend who works for the NFL.

Venz doesn’t go to many Broncos games at Mile High Stadium in Denver, but she’s ready to be loud in the stands of Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.

“I’m really just excited to be see a football game live,” she said. “I feel like I might be experiencing part of history here with Peyton Manning, so that’s really cool. I’m just ready to cheer on the Broncos.”

Karen Conklin, of Eagle, is heading to her second Super Bowl in three years with her husband, as they were at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey when the Broncos played the Seattle Seahawks.

“We went to that horrible one two years ago,” Conklin said. “We call it the Super Blow.”

Conklin and her husband are season ticket holders, but they are at the low end of the priority pool, so they placed an ad on Craigslist seeking other season ticket holders who won Super Bowl tickets but aren’t going.

“I’m excited to go where the weather is good,” she said. “I want to see a good game. Of course, we want our guys to win.”

It has been an interesting turn of events since the last time the Broncos were in the Super Bowl, a 43-8 beating at the hands of the Seahawks in 2014.

“Everybody’s kind of poo-pooing the Broncos, but two years ago, the No. 1 offense went up against the No. 1 defense, and we all know what happened then,” Berger said.
