AVON — The Eagle River Fire Protection District extinguished flames behind the firebox of a wood-burning fireplace in a residence on East Wildridge Road on Thursday.

Crews responded to a report of a structure fire in a single-family residence at about 10:30 a.m. and found working flames that had extended inside the wall and up the chimney chase toward the attic, said the Eagle River Fire Protection District.

Vail Fire and Emergency Services, Avon Police Department, Eagle County Paramedic Services and the Vail Public Safety Communications Center also responded. The cause is still under investigation.

“This family did exactly the right thing,” said Tracy LeClair, of the Eagle Fire Protection District. “They smelled smoke and immediately called 911 and got out of the home.”

With two other incidents taking place, including a sprinkler system pipe that burst and a fire alarm in a multi-residential unit, at one point all Eagle River Fire Protection District units were in use, LeClair said.

“We respond to all structure fires with a minimum of three engines, one ladder truck and one battalion chief,” LeClair said.
