Gypsum Public Library project stuffs stockings for local teens

Once again, the Gypsum Public Library will make, decorate and stuff stockings to give to the Salvation Army for teens who would otherwise not get presents this holiday season.

If you would like to make a stocking for a teen in need, then please deliver it to the Gypsum Library by Dec. 4. Contact the library if you need a basic stocking pattern, but all handmade stockings are more than welcome!

If You’re No Seamstress

If sewing is not your thing, then community members can also help out by donating items for both boys’ and girls’ stockings, such as socks, gloves, trail mix, candy, books, ornaments, key chains, lip gloss, wallets, etc. to any one of the Eagle Valley Library District Libraries (Avon, Eagle or Gypsum).

Remembering Loved Ones

The teen stocking project was launched by library staff member Susan Hicks back in 2010.

“That year, I read an article about a mom in Utah who had lost her daughter in a tragic auto accident,” said Hicks, a staff member at the Gypsum Public Library. “When the holidays rolled around, she wanted to turn her grief into a positive action for the holidays. Since her daughter was 16 when she died, she decided to make stockings, fill them with items for teens, and donate them. That year, I had lost three loved ones and felt that this would be a great project to do for teens in our area.”

This past year’s “stuffing party” generated 30 stocking for the Salvation Army — 15 for boys and 15 for girls.

“The Salvation Army was delighted to receive items that were geared towards teens from needy families,” said Hicks. “They said they often do not have items for teen gifts.”

For more information on the stocking stuffing project, call Susan at the Gypsum Public Library 970-524-5080.
