Make-your-own wine with Walking Mountains in Avon

AVON — Join Walking Mountains Science Center on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., to explore The Science Behind: Homemade Wine. The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.

On Wednesday, guest presenter, Beth Reed from the Wine or Wort store in Gypsum, will share her passion for and expertise in homemade wine. This hands-on program will help you understand the basics of winemaking and will offer samplings of chocolate raspberry port.

The seminar will also explore answers to questions such as:

How is wine made on a small scale, and how does it differ from large-scale winery production?

What are sulfites, and why are they added to wine?

How can we experiment with different flavors and non-traditional wines?

Most importantly, participants will roll their sleeves and make a batch of wine.

Participants will not be able to take home their wine from the event due to the timescale of winemaking; Wine or Wort will invite the group to bottle this batch to take home at their Gypsum store on a future date. Seating is limited, so please call 970-827-9725 to reserve a space. The class is for ages 21 and older only.
