VVAG Members Painting Together During a Workshop Held at Alpine Arts Center Last Year.

EDWARDS — A new exhibit is hanging at Alpine Arts Center in Edwards, just in time for the annual Artists' Holiday Market taking place this weekend. The artwork on display is by Vail Valley Art Guild (VVAG) members, and their paintings are all part of a small works exhibit designed to be the perfect size for holiday gifts. In addition to the VVAG exhibit, there are more than 15 local artists showcasing handmade items including jewelry, pottery, crochet, knitting, home accessories, greeting cards, kids clothing and more.

Market hours are Friday from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alpine Arts Center, located in the Edwards Commercial Park. The public is invited to browse and shop for gifts, enjoy hot cider and cookies, and kids crafts will be offered from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the weekend. There is also a Holiday Party open to the public on Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m. with live music by Johnny Schleper and Rob Eaton Jr., complimentary appetizers, wine and beer available for purchase, and holiday shopping all evening long.

Charmayne Thevenet Bernhardt, one of VVAG's members, is an artist/illustrator who works in a variety of mediums. Primarily a watercolorist, she enjoys painting landscapes, wildlife and flowers. She both loves and respects this challenging medium, which delights and terrifies her at times. Presently, she has to wear an eye patch due to a bout with shingles in 2009, and although she is hopeful to regain her sight it hasn't caused her to stop painting.

"It will be easier to paint with two eyes again, but there are worse things in life and I'm grateful," Bernhardt said.

Another participating artist is Marjory Wilson. As one of the show organizers, Wilson is excited to see so many members exhibiting together.

"Always in the creative mind, I spent many years as an illustrator, editorial artist, creative director, corporate marketing executive and agency owner," she said. "But painting has always been my joy, relaxation and passion. Over the years I continued my art edification at Art Students League of Denver, Rocky Mountain College of Art, Arapahoe Community College, Colorado Art Institute, Pacific Art League and most recently as a student and teacher at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards."

Other VVAG participants include Vida Wilson, Terri Allender, Joan Willoughby, Linda Zerague, Linda Sneath, Joann Levy and Hatsie Hinmon. Their art ranges from landscapes and still life paintings to animals and holiday scenery. Many artists share Hinmon's sentiments that she is thrilled when patrons find as much enjoyment from her paintings as she does when creating them. Vail Valley Art Guild invites the public to stop by during the artist reception Saturday evening to enjoy this community celebration of art in the Vail Valley.
