Avon Public Library hosts Lt. Gov. Garcia for One Book 4 Colorado
May 17, 2013
The Avon Public Library will host a very special “Birthday Party for Four-Year-Olds” this week to coincide with the state’s One Book 4 Colorado initiative. Colorado Lieutenant Governor Joe Garcia will visit the Avon Public Library on Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. During the first half hour of his visit, the library will host a “Birthday Party for Four-Year-Olds,” during which Garcia will read and distribute this year’s chosen book. The library will follow up the story with a birthday party — complete with cake, music and a craft. All 4-year-olds and their families are invited to participate and receive a free book courtesy of the One Book 4 Colorado initiative.
From 2 to 3 p.m. Lt. Gov. Garcia is inviting the public to join in a community conversation to discuss early childhood literacy in Eagle County. The focus of this public meeting will be on hearing from local educators, preschool/daycare providers, youth service organizations, business and community leaders, public health and medical care providers, libraries and parents regarding the early literacy successes and challenges faced by our community. All members of the community are invited to attend the community conversation with Garcia.
One Book 4 Colorado aims to promote early literacy by providing all Colorado four-year-olds with a selected book. The yearly project is a collaboration between Garcia’s office, Reach Out and Read Colorado, Colorado State Library, the Denver Preschool Program, public libraries, the private sector and nonprofit and foundation communities. Books can be picked up at all of the Eagle Valley Library District libraries, as well as public libraries across the state of Colorado. The book will also be given out during regular medical visits at Eagle County Public Health, Eagle Care and Eagle Valley Medical Center. See http://www.onebook4colorado.org/pickup-locations for the complete list of pickup locations.
The four-year-old birthday party and the community conversation programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Avon Public Library at 970-949-6797.
