AVON — Meet the Cooke family. Our narrator is Rosemary Cooke. As a child, she never stopped talking; as a young woman, she has wrapped herself in silence — the silence of intentional forgetting and of protective cover. Something happened, something so awful she has buried it in the recesses of her mind.
Now her adored older brother is a fugitive, wanted by the FBI for domestic terrorism. Her once lively mother is a shell of her former self, and her clever and imperious father is now a distant, brooding man. And Fern, Rosemary's beloved sister, her accomplice in all their childhood mischief? Fern's is a fate the family, in all their innocence, could never have imagined.
So begins "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves," the latest novel from Karen Joy Fowler and the winner of the 2014 PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. In a review of "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves" in The New York Times, author Barbara Kingsolver said: "'We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves' is a novel so readably juicy and surreptitiously smart, it deserves all the attention it can get." The Kirkus (starred) review said: "Rosemary's voice — vulnerable, angry, shockingly honest — is so compelling and the cast of characters, including Fern, irresistible. A fantastic novel: technically and intellectually complex, while emotionally gripping."
Fowler is the author of six novels and three short story collections. The "Jane Austen Book Club" spent 13 weeks on The New York Times bestsellers list and was a New York Times Notable Book. Fowler's previous novel, "Sister Noon," was a finalist for the 2001 PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. Her debut novel, "Sarah Canary," was a New York Times Notable Book. Fowler and her husband, who have two grown children and five grandchildren, live in Santa Cruz, California.
