AVON — Chilean winery owner Matias Garces Silva and Winebow Italian specialist Mario Scanu will pour Chilean and Italian wines as part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series today.
Silva launched Amayna with his family’s support in 2002. The word “amayna” in Chile loosely translates to “the calm before the storm” — it is that ominous-yet-peaceful feeling that you only experience around the ocean. Their winery and vineyards sit just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean.
The Leyda Valley is located in a valley that lies between the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean and runs parallel to Chile’s Central Valley. Its gentle coastal hills are characterized by poor soils and very dry climate. Amayna stems from grounds that are quite heterogeneous due to a dry coastal climate. The estate has two soil types: granitic soil and alluvial soil. They have 37 acres, which were planted in 1999 and onwards. The family practices sustainable vineyard management and intervene as little as possible.
Scanu, an Italian wine specialist for Winebow and Sardinian native, will cover the Italian side of the tasting, pouring four of his favorite summer wines.
Founded in 1980 by Leonardo LoCascio, America’s preeminent authority on Italian wine, Winebow imports more than 400 wines from Italy under the Leonardo LoCascio Selections label. In 2005, Winebow began reaching out to other prominent wine regions and now has a diverse portfolio of wines from Argentina, Austria, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, Hungary, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, as well as sakes and artisanal spirits.
Charles Hays, vin48’s chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. The event is part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series, which takes place every Wednesday and features winemakers/importers from the world’s best wine growing region. The wines are paired with Hays’ cuisine. The event is $25, which includes wine tasting and appetizers. All wines served are available at discounted prices from series partner Beaver Liquors in Avon.
