Comedy Night returns to The Back Bowl in Eagle Saturday
July 17, 2014
EAGLE — Somewhere between his first couple of years doing stand-up in his hometown of Denver, Troy Walker thought it might be best to finish one of his childhood goals, just in case "this comedy thing" didn't work out. So, between gigs and even on days of appearances around town, Walker would settle into a stack of books at law school.
Perhaps that's an explanation for his keen observational skills and his ability to weave those observations in the hilarious delivery that has earned Walker, who appears Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at The Back Bowl in Eagle, two first-place finishes in the Summer Comedy Contest held annually by Denver's top club, Comedy Works.
Walker knew early that he needed to flex his comedic muscles. He was still in high school when he began to approach clubs about getting a shot at stand-up. Being a minor at the time did not bode well for his success in the clubs and he settled for writing and doing improv in school and college.
He was finally able to start performing at various open mic's, scratching and clawing his way up from heckler-ridden dive bars to some of the biggest stages in Denver. As testimony to his resilience and effort, he is now a member of the regular rotation at Comedy Works. When he's not headlining there, he is opening for some of the top comic talent in the country when they pass through town.
In addition to his Denver and other regional gigs, he has performed in The Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival, The Great American Comedy Festival, The Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, The Telluride Comedy Festival and the prestigious Aspen Laff Festival, where he was the winner of the "New Faces" contest.
This will be the first show of the summer for Comedy Night at The Bowlmor at The Back Bowl, after a brief mud-season hiatus following the most successful season since the live comedy series began over eight years ago. Comedy Night at The Bowlmor works in partnership with Comedy Works to bring the region's top stand-up talent to Eagle County.
Opening Saturday's bill will be rising star Elliott Woolsey. He regularly appears at the Denver Improv, Comedy Works and Comedy Works South. His high-energy and charismatic style have helped him become a mainstay of Denver's comedy scene, winning many of the local "new talent" competitions.
Tickets for Comedy Night at The Bowlmor are on sale now for $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Group rates are also available. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Back Bowl or by phone with a credit card by calling 970-328-BOWL.
