June 27, 2013
VAIL — Bravo! Vail opens its 26th season tonight with "Hits from Golden Age of Jazz" featuring the Dallas Symphony Orchestra led by Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik together with celebrated trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling. This evening of jazz classics begins at 6 p.m. at Vail's Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. Presented in partnership with the Vail Jazz Foundation, "Hits from Golden Age of Jazz" showcases music made immortal by America's jazz legends. Concertgoers can look forward to definitive songs such as Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher," Memphis Slim's "Every Day I Have the Blues," Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and Louis Armstrong standards such as "Basin Street Blues," as well as arrangements by Tyzik that showcase the orchestra's lush dynamic sounds, precision and tight harmonies. Tickets range from $27 to $99 and are on sale at bravovail.org or by calling 877-812-5700. Lawn tickets for children 12 and younger are $5.
"Vail Jazz welcomes the opportunity to once again collaborate with Bravo! Vail on the opening night of its 26th season," said Howard Stone, founder and chair of Vail Jazz Foundation. "Our joint efforts over the last several years have allowed each organization to reach out to a broader audience and enhance the cultural life of our community. Friday night's performance is aptly entitled 'Hits From The Golden Age of Jazz'; (it's) a truly unique concert with great soloists, a great orchestra and a very hip conductor who will join together and take us on a jazz journey recalling classics by legendary jazzmen, including Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock and Cannonball Adderley."
Jazz After, the popular after-party for Bravo! Vail jazz events produced in partnership with the Vail Jazz Foundation, also returns for the 2013 season. Jazz After — Orchestra Jazz Jams — transforms the Great Room at the Larkspur Restaurant in Vail into a jazz club where select members of resident orchestras perform jazz. Don't miss the Dallas Jam on Saturday night; the Philly Jam on July 10; and the New York Jam on July 24.
Special guests of Saturday's Dallas Jam include Byron Stripling, Jeff Clayton (saxophone) and Ken Walker (bass). Dallas Jam begins at 9:15 p.m. Advance ticket purchase is recommended, as these events traditionally sell out. Seating is $20 in advance or $25 day of show. Larkspur will have a $20 minimum food and beverage per person.
Bravo! Vail, Colorado's premier international six-week summer music festival, brings world-renowned musicians to venues throughout Eagle County each season and draws guests from around the world.
The only festival in North America to host three of the world's finest orchestras in a single season, Bravo! Vail celebrates its 26th season through Aug. 3 under the direction of Anne-Marie McDermott, artistic director, and James W. Palermo, new executive director.
