Denver classical chamber group Sphere Ensemble comes to Vail
February 4, 2014
VAIL — Bravo! Vail is presenting a winter residency with Denver's Sphere Ensemble, including education programs and community concerts in Edwards and Vail today through Friday. Sphere Ensemble is a new classical chamber music ensemble that performs without a conductor, melding the fullness of the string orchestra repertory with the intimacy of a string quartet. The group's performances flow seamlessly from classical to jazz, fusion, pop and rock.
This week, Sphere Ensemble will lead a range of programs from in-school activities at Berry Creek Middle School to community concerts in Edwards and Vail that are free and open to the public. The in-school activities will showcase the important skills of shared leadership and collaboration that form the framework for their performances.
Students at Berry Creek Middle School will have the opportunity to experience the joy of live music over a two-day period with members of Sphere Ensemble. In addition to traditional concert presentations, hands on opportunities to experience and make music will be combined with elements of surprise, where music will be injected into the daily schedule. Sphere Ensemble will serenade students in the hallways as they change classes on Thursday before participating in three 30-minute Den Tribe Pride Sessions with students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. Later that afternoon, Sphere Ensemble members will host an after-school, hands-on workshop that is open to everyone at Berry Creek Middle School. On Friday afternoon, Sphere perform again.
At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sphere Ensemble will perform a free concert at Lake Creek Apartments Community Room in Edwards. On Friday, Sphere Ensemble will "pop up" in various locations in and around Vail. This will be Bravo! Vail's own version of a flash mob. Potential locations may include the Vail Transportation Center and popular lunch spots throughout Vail Village. Sphere Ensemble's final performance will be a free community concert at the Vail Interfaith Chapel at 6 p.m. For more information about Bravo!
