Building a school is like buying a house. Now you have to put stuff in it, and that leads us to this year's Harvest Party.
It's a fundraiser for the Eagle County Charter Academy and it takes place Friday night at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion.
"The building is all paid for. Now we have to put things in it," said David Courtney, who's helping coordinate the benefit through his business, Beaver Liquors in Avon.
The charter academy's 345 students moved into the new building, but they still need stuff, Courtney said, such as books, computers, and other school stuff. They even need a couple crosswalks.
This is the 16th Harvest Party.
This year it's 36 wines, 12 restaurants, one great party.
"In some of those restaurants you couldn't have two glasses of wine and an appetizer for $40," Courtney said.
Vin 48, which won an intergalactic pork cookoff last year, is preparing pork cheeks in a chili sauce.
Bol will serve a spicy tuna tartar with sesame and avocado tamari.
Zino is bringing riccota bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil.
Route 6 Café is cooking up its world famous braised free range buffalo meatloaf with a red wine sauce.
For some events chefs provide the food and make suggestions for wines. Courtney doesn't think it should be that way, so it isn't.
They collaborate with the chefs and Beaver Liquors provides the wines paired with each dish.
The live entertainment is two bands, Jonny Mogambo and the Turntable Review, a local rock band that sounds like all the good stuff from Janis Joplin's Big Brother and the Holding Company.
You cannot buy tickets at the door. Tickets must be purchased through Beaver Liquors in Avon, and picked up there.
They have lots of gift certificates and other silent auction items.
"It's a great event. We'll try to make sure everyone leaves with something," Courtney said.
