VAIL — Imagine watching an orchestra's violinists saw at their strings, trumpet players go red in the face with their efforts and drummers thundering away on the big stage. Now imagine watching and hearing just a handful of orchestra musicians in a small room cutting loose in a freestyle jam. Front and center will be jazz guitar icons Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo as well as conductor/trumpeter Jeff Tyzik.
This rare scene comes to life following the Bravo! Vail Dallas Symphony Orchestra concert Wednesday night with the Dallas Jam at Larkspur Restaurant at 9:15 p.m. A joint production of the Vail Jazz Festival and Bravo! Vail, the Dallas Jam is the first of the Vail Jazz Festival's trio of exclusive Jazz After performances this summer.
Following the full symphony's performance at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, select instrumentalists will accompany Tyzik, Vignola and Raniolo — in town to kick off the 20th anniversary season of the Vail Jazz Festival's Jazz @ Vail Square series on Thursday — to the intimate, indoor stage at Larkspur.
"The Jazz After concerts are pure, spontaneous masterpieces involving the talent of a few select individuals. They are as one-of-a-kind as it gets," said Robin Litt, executive director of the Vail Jazz Foundation. "Frank and Vinny always bring an element of spontaneity and fun and it's only bound to be magnified when they team up with members of the Dallas Symphony. It's not every day that you get to listen to artists of this caliber play this way. The setting at Larkspur feels just like a cozy jazz club."
Tickets are limited and can be purchased at vailjazz.org for $30 in advance. Larkspur will have a $30 food and beverage minimum per person. Complimentary valet parking is available.
