Have you ever wondered if your home is efficient? Join Walking Mountains Science Center, EnergySmart Colorado and the Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability to learn about The Science Behind Your Home on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
The intention of the Science Behind Your Home is to teach local homeowners about why their homes behave the way they do, how to prevent heat loss and how to make improvements in order to make a more efficient and safer home. Guest presenters John-Ryan Lockman and Megan Gilman will showcase many of the high efficiency building elements of Walking Mountains Science Center buildings as examples of "best practices" for new construction. Some of the scientific principles that will be covered are heat exchange, convection versus conduction, stack effect and thermodynamics. Learn how the different elements in your home such as windows, boilers, furnaces and insulation all work together to keep you warm. Lockman and Gilman will also discuss how to identify possible problems with the system. Participants of this class will learn about all local/regional incentives to implement both renewable and efficiency improvement projects and will also be offered a special offer for an EnergySmart home assessment.
Gilman has extensive experience in demand-side energy efficiency, energy code compliance, energy saving projections and renewable energy integration. In her position at Active Energies, she regularly consults project teams on cost-effective energy improvements, including calculations of cost-benefit analysis and return-on-investment of energy-related improvements. Lockman, in his position with the Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability, works with Energy Smart Colorado to help homeowners in Eagle County through the process of increasing the efficiency and safety of their homes.
The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.
