AVON — Most normal people can distinguish about 4,000 smells, but a good perfumer has up to 10,000 elements in their smell memory. In France, le nez or “the nose” is the most important tool in the craft.

Using natural materials such as sweet almond oil, distilled water, alcohol and various essential oils, this event offers participants the ability to learn the art of creating their own scents Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

AN OLFACTORY EXPERIENCE

The Science Behind Perfume event will delve into the history of perfumery and the building blocks of mixing and creating scents using essential oils and balanced notes. The class will also explore the science of smell and how the nose and brain work together to interpret and shape your olfactory experience.

In this hands-on program, students will leave with two unique perfumes that are meant to improve with age. Students will be able to follow a recipe or create a free-style combination all their own. The class will be taught by Walking Mountains Science Center staff members and aroma enthusiasts Lara Carlson and Kristen Belschner.

The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.

Spaces for the perfume class is limited and the cost is $15 per person for supplies. Call 970-827-9725 to reserve your spot.
