Walking Mountains — Summer science camps

Waking Mountains summer science camps let children experience the wild places of the Eagle County, while nurturing their connection to the natural world through backyard explorations.

“Not only are kids learning about different science concepts at our camps, but they are also connecting with the natural world and given the time to explore and identify with the plants and animals that are around them,” said Beth Garrison, Walking Mountains youth programs director. “We go on U.S. Forest Service and and BLM sites, such as the McCoy fossil beds — kids can dig in the earth and hold fossils that are 300 million years old.”

New Walking Mountains summer programs this year include Do You See What I See?, a program for kids entering grade 7 and 8 on the presence of light in the world. The July 14-18 week will offer ways for children to create optical illusions, experiment with bending light energy and discover the electromagnetic spectrum.

The new Farm to Table program August 4-8 is offered for 5th and 6th graders, allowing them to experience the path of local food as it travels from farm to table.

“The kids are actually going to put together everything they have learned at the grocery store and tie it all together to create a meal,” Garrison said.

A new overnight program called Lay of the Land is a backpacking trip for grades 9-11. In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, participants will take on backcountry field research and wilderness skills on this four-night, five-day backpack.
