Taste Austrian and Colorado wines in Avon Wednesday

AVON — Select Austrian wine from the importer Domaine Select Wine Estates will be showcased at vin48 in Avon tonight as part of the restaurant and wine bar’s weekly tasting series. In addition vin48 welcomes award winning winemaker Lance Hanson, from Jack Rabbit HIll winery in Hotchkiss.
Dan Kratzer, wine specialist for Domaine Select Wine Estates, will pour four of his favorite regional Austrian wines. The company was founded by Paolo and Allison Domeneghetti in 1999 in order to represent wines and spirits which are of the highest quality and which express tremendous character, particular to their origin. The company now operates as a national importer of fine wines and boutique spirits from around the world. Domaine Select Wine Estates was named Food & Wine magazine’s 2010 American Wine Awards as Importer of the Year, representing the culmination of more than a decade of devotion, passion and a dynamic position in the wine and spirits trade and recognizing the work of the amazing growers, winemakers and distillers.
The second table at the vin48’s tasting will feature Hanson of Jack Rabbit HIll. Jack Rabbit Hill is a 70-acre farm located on Redlands Mesa, near Hotchkiss. Jack Rabbit Hill makes wines from 22 acres of certified-biodynamic vineyards. Jack Rabbit Hill is also home to the Peak Spirits distillery, makers of Cap Rock organic gin and vodka as well as a host of grappas and eaux de vies.
The farm also has 20 acres of pasture with small families of cattle, sheep and chickens and 12 acres of protected wildlife habitat.
Most recently Hanson planted 10 acres of organic hops to supply the many Colorado craft brewers. This year Hanson was nominated by the James Beard Foundation for outstanding wine and spirits professional.
“The biodynamic standard helps us use the farm’s own natural assets to grow better, more expressive fruit with a lighter footprint than conventional or other organic standards,” said Hanson, owner of Jack Rabbit Hill.
Soil, plant and wine vitality are supported with a range of holistic biodynamic practices: composting for building soils, compost and herb teas for plant nutrition, habitat for diverse insects and microorganisms for balancing pests, and livestock for manuring. No synthetic fertilizers or biocides are used at Jack Rabbit Hill.
The event is part of vin48’s summer tasting series, which takes place every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. vin48 serves products from visiting winemakers, breweries, importers and industry insiders and pairs them with Hayes’ cuisine. The cost of the tasting event is $25, and includes the wine tasting and food. All of the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.
