Taste Northern Italian wines and Italian olive oil in Avon Wednesday

AVON — Italian wine and olive oil importer Steve Lewis will pour Northern Italian wines and estate Italian olive oils from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at vin48 in Avon today as part of the restaurant and wine bar’s weekly tasting series.
Lewis, owner of Giuliana Imports, will pour four of his favorite Northern Italian wines from the Giuliana portfolio. Giuliana Imports is a wine and olive oil importer founded by Lewis and Tavio Laudisio in 1996 in Boulder. Giuliana represents some of the finest family-owned estates in Italy, with a focus on the great Barolo and Barbaresco producers of Piedmont.
Lewis will pour white, rose and red wines, including Proprieta Sperino, Rosa del Rosa — a rose of nebbiolo from the northern Piemontese town of Lessona. Proprieta Sperino is the realization of a dream: to restore the important tradition of Lessona wines by recovering the historic cellars to produce a wine with the greatest respect for local tradition.
In the ’70s, Paolo De Marchi moved to Tuscany where he founded the wine producing estate Isole & Olena, which played a leading role in the rebirth of Chianti Classico. But his desire was to return to his origins one day, and indeed, in 1999 with his son Luca, he did, and once again took the reins of the historic family estate, at the Castle of Lessona in via Sperino.

The second half of the tasting will focus on all estate Italian extra virgin olive oils from Lewis’ Giuliana Direct Olive Oil. Giuliana Direct Olive Oil was created to make it affordable and easy for you to buy fresh, real extra virgin olive oil from some of today’s greatest producers in Italy, France and Spain. Extra virgin olive oil is full of flavor and packed with antioxidants, vitamins and freshness you don’t find in commercial olive oils. One of the oils being poured is De Carlo from Puglia. De Carlo Olio is produced from 100 percent Coratina from a single site in Tenuta Torre di Mossa. The age of the trees is unknown, but range from 120 to more than 200 years old. Deep green in color, packed with aromas of olive, green grass, artichoke and green almonds, it is one of the great jewels of Italian oil production.
Charles Hays, vin48’s chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. The event is part of vin48’s summer tasting series, which takes place every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Vin48 serves wines from visiting winemakers, breweries, distillers, importers and industry insiders and pairs them with Hays’ cuisine.
