TEDxVailWomen engages students, the community

Corinne Hara and Kat Haber, organizers of the 2013 TEDxVailWomen event, have pulled in the largest network of community organizations and volunteers in the history of the Vail event.

VAIL — Tickets are selling fast for the amazing TEDxVailWomen event on Dec. 5 at the Edwards Interfaith Chapel in Edwards. The event features live speakers and live-streamed speakers from the global San Francisco TEDWomen event.

All will offer inspiring talks that elevate the community. What makes this TEDx event special is that it has a global scale and impact but also reflects and engages many diverse parts of the local community.

Students from Stone Creek Middle School will deliver short TEDx talks about their ideas for improving our world. Battle Mountain High School honors students have been working tirelessly, creating interactive “art and ideas spaces” and building sets for the many activities that go along with TEDxVailWomen. These include facilitated art workshops, random-acts-of-kindness card-making, chalk talks, making a community bucket list and integrating inspiring ideas into our community, all of which are facilitated by the Vail Leadership Institute. The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and Battle Mountain High School students are creating an alpine garden crossword. SKEA will provide a clothing technology station, MCDT Rappers will entertain and a Mayan lunch will be served. A tapas party and celebration closes the evening.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x denotes independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized and subject to certain rules and regulations.

TED origins

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available for free at http://www.ted.com.

TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
