MINTURN — The free Minturn Concert Series continues Thursday with The Cowboy Dave Band. Bring the kids, camp chairs, dogs on leashes and a picnic dinner and join in the fun at Little Beach Park and Amphitheater in Minturn, which sits on the banks of the Eagle River.
Hillbilly yuckster by day, Saturday-morning-cartoon hero by night, Cowboy Dave Wilson and his band of honky-tonk all-stars are poised to put the western back in country and western. Known to many as the deadpanned FortyTwenty frontman and fiddle player, Wilson has spent the better part of this decade honing his craft in honky-tonks around the country.
The debut Cowboy Dave recording, a six-song EP, was released on Slackjaw Records. With the help and guidance of Emmy-nominated producer Greg Kincheloe, the album features an array of gritty, country-flavored cowbilly songs penned by Wilson.
The Denver-based group brings a plethora of experience to its high-energy live show. In its short existence, the Cowboy Dave Band has toured regionally, playing shows on the road with such acts as David Allan Coe, Junior Brown, Wayne Hancock, the Derailers, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Chuck Mead, Split Lip Rayfield, Aaron Watson and Stoney LaRue. In addition to Wilson’s original songs, the Cowboy Dave Band rounds out its shows with classic cowboy material primarily from the 1950s and ’60s.
The group of Front Range veterans includes Glenn Taylor (pedal steel), Scott Johnson (doghouse bass), Adam Stern (guitar) and Andy Walters (drums).
Immediately following the show, join the fun at Kirby Cosmos for beer, barbecue, and a chance to win prizes. Coors Tap The Rockies has donated a keg in support of the Minturn Community Fund, and also several grand prizes for the big drawing at the end of the season. At every after party you can enter to win prizes such as: a 2015 WinterWonderGrass festival ticket donated by Bonfire Entertainment, a pair of skies, a cruiser bike, tent, and a cooler donated by Coors Tap The Rockies, and several gift certificates from businesses around Eagle County. These grand prizes will be drawn on Aug. 28 at the final after party of the season at The Minturn Saloon. There are prize giveaways every night as well. Raffle tickets cost $1 and can only be purchased at the after parties.
The concert starts at 6 p.m., and is a rain-or-shine show. Cans of 3.2 percent alcohol beer is allowed but there is no glass allowed in the park. Other shows in this year’s series include Euforquestra, Gypsy Moon, Bill McKay Band, In the Realm and Bonfire Dub.
