The Reading Buddies volunteer program is recruiting kids, teens
January 20, 2014
Teens, is this the year you’ve resolved to make a difference your community? The libraries of the Eagle Valley Library District and The Literacy Project of Eagle County are collaborating to offer a winter session of Reading Buddies, a free reading enrichment program at the Avon, Eagle and Gypsum public libraries. The Reading Buddies program pairs trained teen volunteers entering grades 9-12 with a younger child (students entering grades 1-3). Reading Buddies meet up once a week at the libraries to read, play games and do reading-related activities.
“The Reading Buddies program is designed to give kids extra reading practice one-on-one with a caring, creative teen mentor,” said Dale Green, who specializes in services for teens at the Eagle Public Library. “All of our teen volunteers receive training to be a Big Buddy, and one of their primary goals is to make the reading experience fun for their Little Buddy.”
GIVING YOUNG READERS A BOOST
Green started the Reading Buddies program at the Eagle Public Library in the summer of 2010. Since then, the program has expanded to all three of the Eagle Valley Library District libraries, giving a boost to hundreds of young readers.
The Reading Buddies program is also a great way for teens to give back. “Typically, Big Buddy volunteers are teens who love reading, enjoy working with younger children and want to make a difference with the youth in their own communities,” Green said.
All teen volunteers will receive training both before and during the program.
