Vail Daily fashion column: Fireworks and fashion for the Fourth
Ryan Summerlin June 28, 2014
As we salute the good ‘ol U.S. of A., it’s time to pledge your allegiance to patriotic-inspired looks that will give your Fourth of July soiree a star-spangled panache of its own. Whether you party it up by a mountain lake, sip cocktails on the Solaris terrace or indulge in a festive Bottomless Dinner at Maya, tap into your fashionista wisdom and flaunt your red, white and blue.
If you are a fearless couture queen, wave your flag of independence and slip into a jaw-dropping outfit that will set off those fireworks. Wear your heart front and center in the racy MINKPINK “Heart and Soul” Bodysuit ($49, Blitz in Edwards). Designed with a soft, stretchy knit bustier bodice and featuring a cut out directly over your heart and soul, you will be the belle of the July Fourth ball. A little less seductive, but just as spicy, is the HANRO of Switzerland “Laia” Spaghetti Dress ($148, Lacy’s – The Topp Drawer). This nautical-inspired, slinky dress features a delicate Swiss embroidered neckline and a continuous horizontal stripe pattern, which will surely validate your patriotism.
Demo’ing your unwavering countryman loyalty doesn’t necessarily need to translate into an in-your-face-Katy-Perry-American-flag-halter-top look. Instead, go just under the American flag radar and opt for pairing super-cute patriotic-enthused tops with traditional or colored denim. A solid red, white or blue denim such as the red 1921 Nikki Jean ($164, Kiwi Boutique), white Dakota Collective Bridget Crop Jean ($118, Kiwi Boutique) or blue Makers Super Skinny Jean ($66, Kiwi Boutique) make for a good canvas to donning eye-popping top options. Combo your jeans with “The Hills” actress Whitney Port’s Whitney Eve top ($48, Cashmere & Coco), the Jack By BB Dakota Brislin Stripe Tank ($48, Kiwi Boutique) or the LA Made navy blue crochet back sweater ($69, Kiwi Boutique).
As any alpine couturist can swear by, white jeans are a staple during the summer months, and we adore the collab of your favorite whites with the Frank & Eileen Barry Limited Edition patriotic shirt ($198, Perch) featuring red stripes and a blue collar. Uber-chic and luxuriously-soft, the shirt is made with 100 percent fine Italian cotton and has that secret-fashion-trick-of-the-trade perma-wrinkle look — no need for ironing or dry cleaning! For a nautical theme, sport the Frank & Eileen Barry Checker & Anchor Shirt ($198, Perch). This signature Frank & Eileen cotton button down is also deliberately crumpled for a laisser-faire, spur-of-the-moment look. Both Frank & Eileen shirts are made on U.S. soil.
Get your beau (and all of his friends!) hot and bothered when you show up to Vail America Days in the MINKPINK “Mexican Madness” Tank ($39, Blitz in Edwards). The “Tacos & Tequila” graphic will surely get your point across as you weave in and out of the July Fourth spectators to cool off with a couple of shots at Los Amigos (which, by the way, opens at 9 a.m. on the Fourth!). When the alpine sun dips behind the mountains and you are gearing up for fireworks, nuzzle your BF in the celebrity-craved Wildfox Seeing Stars Lennon Sweater ($198, Kiwi Boutique). The sweater color, appropriately called Free Love Red, features a fire engine red backdrop with creamy-colored stars.
Known for its laidback, vintage vibe fashion, MINKPINK does not disappoint with the fashion brand’s “Flower Posy” Skirt ($89, Blitz in Edwards). This asymmetrical skirt gives your summer flair a fAWbulous and feminine silhouette.
Accessories for the Fourth of July don’t just mean flaunting your stars and stripes. Show off red, white and blue bangles such as the Fashion Bella Anchor Bracelets ($18 each; Kiwi Boutique) and complement them with the Fashion Bella Long Necklace ($18, Kiwi Boutique). To ward off the evening’s slight mountain chill, pull on the Flying Tomato Flag Scarf ($35, Cashmere & Coco). Your perfectly pedicured toes will wave their own flag when polished in Deborah Lippmann Va Va Voom ($20.50, Cos Bar), a dazzling sapphire glitter or Dior Vernis nail polish ($25.50, Cos Bar) in Rouge, a smooth-as-glass, gel-like lacquer that will shine all Independence Day weekend long. A dark manicure is less than apropos during the summer season, don’t make that fail and paint your digits in the matteen-finished Deborah Lippmann Pseudo Silk Kimono ($20.50, Cos Bar). Accentuating the luxurious textures of exotic silk, this lacquer shimmers and shines with every movement of your hands. The long-lasting formula dries quickly, so it can easily be applied as an after-thought.
Fourth of July usually means a full day of party-hopping. When the last firework sparkles a finale, head home and curl up in the HANRO of Switzerland “Raquel” Short Pajama ($154, Lacy’s – The Topp Drawer) in Cobalt Stripe.
