VAIL — The holiday season is almost here and the Vail Youth Ballet Company has announced that they will perform “The Nutcracker” at the Vilar Performing Arts Center today, Saturday and Sunday.
Since early September, the 21 Vail Youth Ballet Company dancers, younger students from Vail Valley Academy of Dance and members of the community have been rehearsing for the Friends of the Dance biennial performance of “The Nutcracker.” This year’s Nutcracker Cavalier is Tanner Blee, of Grand Junction. Blee has been traveling to the Vail Valley Academy of Dance in Edwards every weekend for rehearsal and brings talent, vast experience and youthful enthusiasm to the task.
“Tanner has been great to work with,” said Anne Powell, Vail Youth Ballet Company artistic director. “He’s wonderful to our dancers, especially Katherine Sayre who is dancing Sugar Plum. He has been great for her confidence. We all feel like he’s one of us. Because we had him here for every rehearsal, we can do the grand pas this year. That makes the show so special.”
In addition to Powell, the Vail Youth Ballet Company choreography is attributed to well-known talent in the Vail Valley including Colin Meiring, JoAnn Moore, Nicole Hattler and Cheryl Senser. This year, the audience will be delighted by new costumes and beautiful props created by Frank Bontempo.
“In the two years since the last presentation, there has been a lot of development among the Company dancers. It’s very exciting for me to see this progress,” Powell said.
About Friends of the Dance
For 30 years, Friends of the Dance has provided a local, affordable holiday tradition for the community. “The Nutcracker” wouldn’t exist without Friends of the Dance. As a nonprofit, Friends of the Dance raises funds every year and is entirely financially responsible for ‘The Nutcracker.” The organization gives more than 100 dancers and performers in Eagle County the opportunity to participate and perform in a professional-quality production at the Vilar Performing Arts Center. Each year, Friends of the Dance provides thousands of dollars in scholarships, which helps dancers from all across Eagle County live out their dreams.
