AVON — Phytonutrients are the chemicals in plant foods that can keep us healthy and prevent disease. Certified health coach and inspirational speaker Angela Gaffney will share knowledge on the subject on Wednesday at Walking Mountains Science Center.
It wasn’t too long ago that Gaffney faced her own struggle with health. She worked many hours as an executive and traveled extensively. Although she enjoyed this lifestyle, it took a toll on her. Gaffney suffered from chronic fatigue, severe joint pain, dizziness, loss of memory, severe muscle weakness and digestive problems.
After struggling with these health issues and receiving no diagnosis for almost two years, Gaffney decided it was time to change her lifestyle and eating habits.
Slowly but surely, her health began to improve and as an added bonus, so did the health and well-being of her husband and children. Today, Gaffney leads an active life without chronic fatigue, joint pain, muscle fatigue and dizziness. She is back to living the life she loves.
Gaffney’s expertise in nutrition empowers others to increase energy, lose weight, eliminate pain and prevent disease.
This Science Behind program will explore what phytonutrients are and the key role they play in healthy living.

The program includes samples of healthy, phytonutrient-rich snacks. The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.

Morning Glory Smoothie
1 cup coconut water
1 cup kale
1/2 of a large banana
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
3 frozen strawberries
5 chunks frozen pineapple
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon chia seeds
Blend the coconut water, kale and banana until smooth. Add frozen fruit, coconut oil and chia seeds and blend until smooth.
Variations: You may add a nut butter, hemp hearts, or brown rice protein powder for additional protein in your smoothie.
