High Altitude Society column: Art on the Rockies brings fine artists to the valley

EDWARDS — This past weekend at Colorado Mountain College in Edwards, you may have seen the many white tents protecting the artwork of over 100 artists from around the country. There was something for everyone, whether your tendencies are toward paintings, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, glass or sculpture. Most people have a special place in their home waiting for that perfect piece to fill the space.

Colleen Everett with the Vail Valley Arts League explained how the festival worked this year.

“The Vail Valley Arts League runs this art show and it is one of our fundraisers,” she said. “Our mission statement is to mentor local artists and create economic opportunities for artists. In addition, we do the children’s art show each year.”

There is another group of artists that are longing for a cooperative art showing space.

“The Vail Valley Art Guild is a group of art students who pay $100 per person for membership to the Guild. The Guild brings in workshop artists from all over and the Guild members attend the workshops. They have many members with the goal of a cooperative art showing space,” Everett added.

Marjory Wilson, of the Vail Valley Art Guild, had the huge undertaking of organizing the silent auction at this year’s Art on the Rockies festival. Presenting artists were encouraged to donate artwork to the auction as a fundraiser. There were many beautiful pieces in Colorado Mountain College that were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Keep this in mind for next year’s event as there were some excellent opportunities to add to your art collection.
