EDWARDS — Vail’s mother of interior design hosted a fete July 1 in celebration of Slifer Designs’ 30th anniversary. Beth Slifer, founder and creative director of Slifer Designs, has taught, mentored and inspired designers throughout the valley and beyond.
An alumni reunion, the party was held in the Slifer Designs showroom in Edwards. Some past employees traveled from as far as Virginia and Maine to be part of the celebration, which was witnessed with the joyful peals of laughter drifting out of the showroom.
Slifer, holding back tears and bringing tears to most everyone’s eyes, reminisced about the start of the company and all the friendships that were forged over drawings and designs. Sure, there are competitors in the industry, but in such a small valley, many of us socialize after hours or collaborate for the big picture.
From my perspective, Slifer Designs has been an amazing place to “grow up.” Sure, I did a stint in New York City, but the Vail Valley is my home; Slifer is my mentor, she encourages us and pushes us.
Slifer Designs has grown from a small design studio (Slifer’s first project was remodeling a condo in Beaver Creek that sold in a few days) to a burgeoning firm with designers who travel to Hawaii, Mexico, California, Boston and Martha’s Vineyard. Where there’s a home that needs design help, Slifer Designs is there.
During the past three decades, there have been trends that have come and gone, but Slifer has remained a leader in the field, whether designing a contemporary home in the mountains or a family beach retreat. Some trends? Light grays, bursts of color, minimalism and clean lines. Gone are heavy draperies that block the gorgeous mountain views, let the light shine in. If you have a piece you love, whether it’s a sculpture, painting, vase or favorite color, incorporate that into your home.
Slifer Designs has matured right alongside our neophyte valley. We are remodeling homes we originally designed in the late 1980s and 1990s. It’s astounding to see how preferences have changed in what feels like a few short years, but is closer to two decades. (Where does the time go? Really!)
To get a true feel of how times have changed, or to take a walk down memory lane, stop by our showroom in Edwards. We have a photo retrospective on display all month — oh how the designs have changed.
A couple of other notable happenings this month include an interior design challenge — bring your most challenging room to Slifer and receive advice on how to transform the space (taking place Thursday, reservations required, call 970-926-8200).
Yvonne Jacobs is the president of Slifer Designs and has been with the company for more than 17 years. She’s designed projects in Mexico, Canada, California and the East Coast, as well as right here at home. For more inspiration, check out www.sliferdesigns.com.
