VAIL — Each January, we ask you to write your love story and share it with Vail Daily readers.

Last year, we got some real tear jerkers.

We introduced you to Lane Gillespie and Jim Muguerza. The two got engaged near the top of Chair 11 on Vail Mountain in November of 2013, the same month that Lane, then age 29, started chemotherapy for an aggressive and rare form of small-cell ovarian cancer. The two tied the knot on the wedding deck near Eagle’s Nest atop Vail Mountain on Valentine’s Day last year.

And then there was Candace Broecker and Brian Loftus, both widows in their 60s who feared they’d never love again — until they found each other, that is. In the year since their story ran in the Vail Daily, their love has only grown and we want to congratulate them on their engagement!

Eagle couple Mark and Karie Grayson met when he was 18 and she was 14. They’ve been married for 30 years, and part of their success is thanks to regular Friday date nights, they shared. They’ve done everything from floating down the Eagle River on inner tubes to candlelight dinners and bike rides in the rain. What we loved most about their story, though, is how utterly real it is: “What I know now is that romance for me isn’t about steamy romance novels or sappy love songs,” Karie wrote. “Romance is about my husband opening the door for me, or writing a note and leaving it on the counter telling me that the roads are slick and to be careful as I drive. Romance is a man who, after a long day at work flying military missions, is willing to pull the vacuum out and help clean up the house. … Romance is a man who is willing to go through life with me, hand in hand. It is about having a best friend; someone who can see me at my worst and love me in spite of it.”

That, folks, is love, pure and simple.

SPILL IT

So we’re at it again. Once again, the Vail Daily and TV8 are teaming up for the fifth annual Tell Us Your Love Story contest. In around 400 words or less, we want you to dish about your love story. And it might not look or sound like a traditional love story. That’s OK, please tell us anyway. Spill the sweet-and-sappy details and perhaps you’ll be one of the lucky winners.

You could write about how you first met your significant other. Maybe you felt a jolt of electricity, or maybe you wanted to slap him in the face, either way, it’s likely something you’ll never forget, and it probably makes for a darn good story.

Or tell us about when you just knew in your heart that person was “the one.” Write about your first or best date with that person, or be a real renegade and tell us about the worst date you ever had with your loved one and how despite the odds, you’ve prevailed.

The top three story tellers will take home a sweet prize. This year’s prizes include dinner for two at Splendido (does it get more romantic than that? We think not), two VIP passes to the Vail Film Festival, a 50-minute couple’s massage at Allegria Spa at the Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek or a one-night stay at The Westin Riverfront Hotel in Avon.

The best stories will be printed in the Vail Daily and the winners will be invited to share their story on TV8.

We don’t care if it’s cheesy, quirky, unlikely or sappy, we want to hear it; you have until Friday. We can’t wait to read your story.
