Ailey II’s young dance talent comes to the Beav’ Tuesday

BEAVER CREEK — The Vilar Performing Arts Center welcomes Ailey II: The Next Generation of Dance on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The company features 12 of the country’s most talented young dancers who are known for captivating audiences and translating their strength and agility into powerful performances.

Under the artistic direction of Troy Powell, this critically-acclaimed company presents vibrant performances and innovative community programs internationally and across the country. The Ailey spirit shines as these artists perform an exhilarating and diverse repertory that includes Alvin Ailey’s timeless classics and thrilling new works by today’s outstanding emerging choreographers.

Ailey II is universally recognized for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most exceptional choreographers.



Founded in 1974, the company embodies Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training and community programs for all people. Under the direction of Sylvia Waters, Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country. With new artistic director Troy Powell at the helm, Ailey II will continue to thrive as he brings a fresh dimension to this beloved company.

In 1958, Alvin Ailey founded the American Dance Theater to carry out his vision of a company dedicated to enriching the American modern dance heritage and preserving the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience.

He established the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center (now The Ailey School) in 1969 and formed the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble (now Ailey II) in 1974. Ailey was a pioneer of programs promoting arts in education, particularly those benefiting under-served communities. Throughout his lifetime, he received numerous honors and awards, and in 2014, he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to civil rights and dance in America.
