VAIL — The Vail Symposium thinks globally and convenes locally, and its 45th season continues Thursday through October and includes the introduction of the first Super Panels.
Programs included are the signature Hot Topics, Living At Your Peak and Consciousness series, as well as new events to focus on local issues.
“Our program committee has done a phenomenal job over the last months to get this set of programs lined up,” said Dale Mosier, successor of Rohn Robbins as Vail Symposium’s chairman of board of directors. “All of the programs offer the community something unique. Our new Super Panels will offer something unprecedented in Vail and truly spectacular.”
SUPER PANELS
Renowned presenters and experts in their fields will make up the Super Panels this summer. The first, “To Cure Cancer: Battling the World’s Most Deadly Disease” on July 30, features lectures and discussions from six scientists.
Support Local Journalism
The second Super Panel is called “EDUCATE!” and features a keynote address from Sir Ken Robinson followed by a discussion from state legislators on issues facing education. (Robinson’s TEDTalk, “Do Schools Kill Creativity,” is the most popular TEDTalk in history with over 40 million views.) This Super Panel assembles Oct. 14.
“These are programs of a great multitude and extreme value,” Mosier said. “Go watch Sir Ken Robinson’s TEDTalk, if you haven’t already, and you will get an idea of the caliber of speakers participating in these events.”
HOT TOPICS
The Vail Symposium will continue its flagship Hot Topics series and will cover geopolitical problems, current events, recent inventions and society’s hot-button issues of today.
Topics include America’s relationship with Russia; future of online higher education; human trafficking; 3-D printing; economic status of women in Colorado; and more to be announced.
CONSCIOUSNESS SERIES
The subjects up for discussion in the Consciousness Series include proving the eternality of the soul using the same standards of our justice system; stretching human consciousness to explore multiple realities and learn healing techniques; and analyzing the legacies of past philosophers to explain the spiritual history of the west.
The Vail Symposium will continues this series in a similar manner as it has previously done with a lecture and a follow-up workshop for those that want to learn more. The series is curated by Gary Gilman to expand the way people address health and wellness, death and dying as well as other consciousness matters.
LIVING AT YOUR PEAK
Dr. Jandel Allen-Davis is the feature speaker for the Living At Your Peak summer series. Allen-Davis served on the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners from 2003-2011 and served a president of the board from 2009-2011.
Her talks on dense and complicated subjects such as health care or personal subjects such as wellness are charismatic, creative and impactful. Allen-Davis’ TEDxMileHigh talk on shortcomings of a broken health care system has been viewed thousands of times.
Allen-Davis has sifted through the misleading ideas of what many believe to define a healthy lifestyle to expose the undiscovered elements of how to truly thrive in the modern landscape of life.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Several other programs defy general categorization.
Timothy Standring, Gates Foundation curator of painting and sculpture at the Denver Art Museum, returns again this year. Last year, he presented about his upcoming Wyeth Exhibit, and this year, he will investigate the life and work of Edgar Degas.
The Vail Symposium also welcomes Vu Le in partnership with Eagle County Public Health & Environment, Eagle River Youth Coalition and SOS Outreach. Le is the mind behind the popular blog “Nonprofit with Balls” and will be part of a multi-day event featuring lectures and small roundtable discussions.
The film series will return for three Saturday nights starting in August and the final event of the season, “The Great Divide Debate,” pits politically passionate local high school seniors against their equally passionate older counterparts in a debate.
“As usual, there is something for everyone to learn and enjoy this summer at the Symposium,” Mosier said. “We kept a lot of what people loved in seasons past and added some programs that are going to blow people away.”
