Eagle County libraries launch ‘Dig Into Reading’ summer series

Get ready to dig deep into a good book. Join the Avon, Eagle and Gypsum public libraries for this year’s summer reading program, “Dig Into Reading.” Students entering first through sixth grades are invited to join the program for eight weeks of summer reading fun. The libraries will offer a variety of weekly programs, movies and contests all about the wonders under our feet — vegetables, buried treasures, archaeology, insects and so much more.

Registration for summer reading begins at the district-wide kickoff celebrations on Tuesday at the Eagle and Gypsum public libraries, and Wednesday at the Avon Public Library. Award-winning children’s musician Eddie Coker will perform a live concert at the Eagle Valley district libraries on the following dates and times:

Eagle Public Library: Tuesday, 1 p.m.

Gypsum Public Library: Tuesday, 3 p.m.

Avon Public Library: Wednesday, 1 p.m.

When children sign up for the “Dig Into Reading” summer reading program, each receives a free book bag with a schedule of events and a reading log to keep track of time spent reading. Prizes are awarded throughout the summer as children reach each of their targeted reading goals.

“We are so excited to bring Eddie Coker back for this special kick-off event,” said Kari Thorne, children’s librarian at the Avon Public Library. “If you see only one opera singer wearing a neon wig this year, make it Eddie Coker.”

For information on dates and times for any of these programs, call the Avon Public Library at 970-949-6797, the Eagle Public Library at 970-328-8800 or the Gypsum Public Library at 970-524-5080, or visit the library website at www.evld.org.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Alpine Bank, all programs are free and open to the public.
