Winemakers from Italy and Oregon attend vin48 tasting

AVON — Vin 48’s Summer Tasting Series kicks off tonight with winemaker-owners Andrew Rich, of Andrew Rich Wines, and Sisto Tessari, of La Capuccina.

“Having two top notch winemakers from Oregon and Italy is a great way to get our summer tasting series rolling,” said Greg Eynon, wine director-owner of vin48. “From the pure, organic Sauvignon Blanc and Soave from La Capuccina to the elegant Willamette Valley pinot and spicy Rhone blends from Andrew Rich, our guests will be in for a wonderful tasting.”

About Sisto Tessari

Sisto Tessari is the agronomist and winemaker for his families groundbreaking organic estate La Capuccina. The name of this wine estate is derived from a small 15th century private chapel where the Capuchin monks of the Franciscan order are thought to have lived.

Although the Tessari family founded the estate over a century ago, it is only since 1985 that they changed back to natural, organic methodology: no chemical fertilizers and no toxic or chemical pesticides. It was at that time that a bad frost killed part of the vine and so, after much consideration, the family decided to return to the traditional ways. Natural, organic means had been used up until the 1950s when so many growers started using chemicals. Many of them were rather poor and the large bribes offered by the chemical companies seemed most desirable.

The Tessari family, now in its third generation, is dedicated to cultivating the 70 acres of organic vineyards. Each family member, Sisto, Pietro and Elena, along with their father Lorenzo, posses a level of wine expertise that ensures quality across the many markets the estate serves. Carefully calibrated fermentation methods are used for each of the individual wines produced at La Cappuccina. The estate is located in the heart of the Soave DOC production zone, at Costalunga di Monteforte d’Alpone in the province of Verona.

About Andrew Rich

Rich is the winemaker and owner of self-named Andrew Rich Wines. Rich left a very successful career as magazine editor, after deciding he wanted to change his lifestyle and jump into wine with “both feet.” He enrolled in a wine school located in Burgundy, France, where there was only one other American student, who also happened to be from Oregon. Years later, it was their friendship that ultimately prompted Rich to migrate north, after working five vintages with Randall Grahm, owner and winemaker at Bonny Doon Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Passionate about Rhone style varietals, Rich was determined to produce these warmer-climate-driven wines, even though he chose to live in Oregon. Starting his own label, Andrew Rich Vintner in 1994, he quickly became a noted pioneer at creating Rhone-driven wines with a Northwest spin.

He continues to work with some of the most respected vineyards in the Columbia Valley of Washington, and he makes pinot noir from the Willamette Valley, too.

Over the years, Rich has created a serious following for his wines. He produces wines under two different labels. The first, Tabula Rasa, meaning “blank slate,” is reserved for wines that are blended from various varietals.

The second, Les Vigneaux means “little vineyards” and is comprised of his single specific wines, which are limited in production.

The current ensemble comprises an octet of highly distinctive wines: white, pink, red, redder, sweet-culminating in the sensuous, opulent and the oh-so-sweeter Gewurztraminer late harvest wine.

Charles Hays, vin48 chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio.

The event is part of vin48’s Summer Tasting Series, which takes place every Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Vin48 serves wines from visiting winemakers, breweries, distillers, importers and industry insiders and pairs them with Hays’ cuisine.

All the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.
