Author, yogi Phyllis Pilgrim comes to Avon

AVON — The Literacy Project has two events coming up this month. On July 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the project will host a yoga and meditation workshop at the Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa. Phyllis Pilgrim, a master teacher from Rancho La Puerta Spa in Tecate, Mexico, will lead yogis through the pleasures of yoga asana, breathing and writing.

The workshop will culminate with a personal writing project based on newly-acquired expanded consciousness: how to plan your future while being in the present moment. Pilgrim will also speak at the annual author luncheon about her memoir, “The Hidden Passport: My Childhood Journey through Japanese Concentration Camps in Java” on July 30.

The healing power of yoga

Pilgrim is living proof of the healing power of yoga. Despite the hardships and cruelty she faced as a child imprisoned in Japanese war camps, she is appreciative of the joy and awareness yoga brought into her life.

“Yoga offers balance, compassion and gratitude,” she said. “Yoga is not just what you do; it’s also who you are.”

She said the benefits of yoga and meditation to include “finding more compassion for yourself, appreciating your body and mind, and embracing change more effectively.”

Event details

All levels are invited to practice yoga with Pilgrim. A $25 donation is suggested for those attending yoga only. Vendors on hand will include Be Present, a Colorado based yoga clothing company; Sugarlicious, a Cherry Creek candy store and Jada Jewelry.

The July 30 luncheon is slated to take place at the Westin. Tickets are $125 per person, including yoga. Corporate tables are available.
