After my last article on hiking the Milford Track in New Zealand for four days, I have had many inquiries. This was the most popular.
Question: What is the best way to see New Zealand for a couple or family with flexibility and affordability as top priorities?
Answer: No doubt about it, a motorhome or camper van, as they call it locally.
New Zealand is the ideal place to see the county with the freedom of a “home on the road.” Choose the road less traveled, stop for a scenic picnic and be free to linger longer or move on when you wish.
New Zealand is abundant with holiday parks, which provide sites with weather and electrical hook-ups. You have easy access to a shared kitchen and bathrooms. These holiday parks are usually beside a beach, mountains or lake and are affordable and convenient. Families can even enjoy swimming pools and play areas at some.
Camper vans are available for pick-up in many of New Zealand’s main cities and can be dropped of in another. For example, you can pickup one in Christchurch and drop in Auckland for no additional charge and no back tracking!
It’s best to make your reservation in advance for your camper van and for at least a few spots in the holiday parks. One downfall is you do have to drive on the left side of the road, so getting an automatic transmission is heartily advised. Rates vary from $55 to $330 per day for a two to six berth motorhome with unlimited miles.
