Haute Alpine Couture fashion column: Fall kicks

These boots were made for walking ... Our trusty TV8 weather sources have given us the thumbs up that winter is here! But you probably already knew that because it’s hard to miss the international ski team cuties stocking up on carbs at Safeway. With snow on the mountains, it is (sigh) time to retire your warm weather zapatos and look for kickers that will keep your pristine, pedicured piggies toasty during the season.

Puddle jumpers

On sunny, high-of-40 mornings, having a good pair of waterproof wellies is an alpine necessity. The collaboration between Hunter boots and rag & bone (tall: $295; short: $265, Perch) has given Hunter another fashion notch up the couture ladder. Although a rain boot, these water waders will keep the moisture out and, when paired with cashmere socks ($99, Gorsuch), you can puddle jump through the afternoon slush without even an ounce of chill. The Hunter and rag & bone boots come in navy (tall) and army green (short). As the temps continue to dip and we head deeper into fall and trek towards winter, opting for a warmer boot is a smart move. The Sorel Tofino boot ($150, Roxy), in black or curry, has it’s own trend-setting statement complete with faux-fur and mega-traction so your feet tread gingerly across slippery conditions.

Ankle

Practical and chic, the ankle boot is truly fall and winter’s biggest achievement. Versatile and comfortable, this season’s ankle boots can be worn with your skinny jeans or with tights and a miniskirt. Strike an elusive balance between tres chic and swanky in a pair of rag & bone Harrow Boots ($495, Perch) in clay, Seychelles Crazy 4 U ($130, Roxy) in whiskey or the UGG Krewe boot ($200, Roxy) in chocolate. For a more rustic style, outfit your feet in the rag & bone Mercer Boot ($575, Perch) in brown or choose a desert-meets-mountain style with Toms Desert Wedge Booties ($89, Roxy). These come in a rainbow of autumn hues including chestnut, taupe, maroon, camo and cheetah print. Love the ankle height, but need a sky-high heel fix? We’ve got our eye on a pair of Ralph Lauren anklet heels ($525, Rouge Boutique).

Middies

In seasons past, the mid-calf boot got a bad rap for not giving your legs the runway model length you’d hoped for, and for sometimes accentuating your muscular ski-bound quads (and, not the pretty kind). But, this season, the middle child syndrome has been put to rest as middies are accruing some serious street-cred. The Rebel Without A Cause-inspired looks on both Yves Saint Laurent and rag & bone catwalks have paved the way for a modern twist on the moto boot trend. The laid-back-yet-edgy style of rag & bone’s Moto Boot ($595, Perch) in black will give your ensemble a couture freedom-fighter look. But, remember, don’t go overkill on this trend — it’s never a good idea to be decked out entirely in motorcycle wear. For kicks a little warmer, but with a similar heavy boot style, UGG black leather boots ($88, Rouge Boutique) will do the trick. Take this au courant moto scene to a slightly more sophisticated level in the Ecco three-buckle mid-calf boot ($135, Rouge Boutique) — the heel is perfect for shaking down at the Shakedown Bar.

Knee-high

Thank goodness the thigh-high boot trend is passe, as you have to be at least 5-foot-10 to pull off those pirates. Knee-high boots dotted Fashion Week from Isabel Marant to Burberry and we saw them paired with leggings and minis across the board. The knee-high boot gives you an elegant silhouette and with a heel, these kickers will create that “all leg” look you’re going for. Burberry lace-up boots ($575, Rouge Boutique) in oxblood red are the perfect finishing touch to your pre-Turkey Day cocktail party, as are the Prada Ostrich Leather boots ($345, Rouge Boutique). Both ooze an exclusive chicness that will be a conversation starter the minute you walk into a room. The fashion mecca look not your style, but you’re still craving a tall boot? The mountain-chic look continues to be a trendsetter in these neck of the woods and we love the western-y panache of both the Darcie UGG ($295, Roxy) in chestnut and the Freebird Drove boot ($298, Roxy) in brown.
