Vail’s inaugural Paper Lantern Project

VAIL — Art in Public Places will open Logan Luminescence in conjunction with the Vail Holidaze tree lighting on Dec. 22. Enjoy the unveiling of this ice sculpture exhibition, along with hot chocolate, entertainment and the community-wide Paper Lantern Project at the Vail Holidaze tree lighting from 5 to 6 p.m. in Slifer Square by the Covered Bridge in Vail Village.

New this season, Vail’s Paper Lantern Project will add to the celebration of light this holiday. Partnering with the town of Vail Public Library, Art in Public Places is hosting free paper lantern making workshops, so you can join the illumination festivities in Vail Village on Dec. 22. Local artist Helen Hiebert, author of the books “Paper Illuminated” and “Playing with Paper,” will instruct participants of all ages on how to create your own paper lantern to bring to Vail’s tree lighting.

“For millennia, cultures throughout the world have celebrated paper and light. Paper and light combine the functional with the decorative, providing a practical necessity, evoking a mood and illuminating works of art,” writes Helen Hiebert in her book “Paper Illuminated.”

Like many other paper lantern festivals around the world, Art in Public Places coordinator Molly Eppard hopes that Vail’s Paper Lantern Project will grow to become a beloved tradition during the holidays in our community.

Paper lantern workshops will take place in the Community Room at the Vail Public Library. The first set of workshops are set for Sunday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (ages 13 and older) and the second set will take place Dec. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. (all ages), just before the tree lighting. Space is limited. Reserve your spot by contacting Eppard at 970-479 2344 or meppard@vailgov.com.
