VAIL — Breathe. Move. Focus. Everyone thinks they do it. Most people, however, are not able to accomplish the simple task of breathing efficiently, effectively and effortlessly as they move and focus. But oxygenating the entire body easily, efficiently and effortlessly brings the body to life and has the capacity to reverse the dysfunctional movement patterns that occur during training.
It seems obvious, but oftentimes takes awareness and practice. On Friday, as part of the Vail Vitality Center’s ongoing Winter Lecture Series, Jeff Jones will offer advice and simple training tips for maximizing breathing for life.
Scarring affects breath
Jones said scars represent one of the main reasons easy, effective and effortless breathing is difficult for most people.
“Scars produce scar tissue, both emotional and physical,” Jones added. “Scars also produce dysfunctional movement patterns, making it harder for humans to move. And, common to all humans, scarring starts with birth.”
The sympathetic nervous system is the body’s “fight or flight” response, and stress is part of the system. The parasympathetic nervous system supports the body at rest. It has been referred to as the system responsible for “rest and digest.”
Different types of scars affect different systems, but the ultimate result is an out of sync effort. Maintaining homeostasis is essential for human survival and humans are more capable of this if the body is oxygenated easily, efficiently and effortlessly.
During the lecture, Jones will share information and anecdotes to help attendees relate to the topic and better understand how the breath affects the body and how to modify breathing to achieve better results.
