BEAVER CREEK — New York-based dance company Complexions Contemporary Ballet will perform at the Vilar Performing Arts Center today at 7:30 p.m. Complexions was founded in 1994 by choreographer Dwight Rhoden and dancer Desmond Richardson — two former members of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater — with a desire to reinvent dance through a mix of methods, styles and cultures.

Having presented a new vision of human movement to five continents, more than 20 countries, more than 20 million television viewers and more than 300,000 people in live audiences, Complexions represents one of the most recognized and respected performing arts brands in the world.

The company’s believes dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of the world — and all its constituent cultures — as an interrelated whole.

As Rhoden and Richardson’s multifaceted resumes will show, neither has ever been comfortable with his art being placed in a box. Instead, from E! to PBS to VH1, from Cirque de Soleil to the Joffrey Ballet, the two have allowed the transformative power of their art to flow freely throughout the entertainment world.

Complexions has received numerous awards, including The New York Times Critics’ Choice Award, and has appeared at major European dance festivals including Italy’s Festival of Dance; the Isle De Dance Festival in Paris; the Maison De La Danse Festival in Lyon, France; the Holland Dance Festival; Steps International Dance Festival in Switzerland; Lodz Biennale; Warsaw Ballet Festival in Warsaw, Poland; Krakow Spring Ballet Festival in Krakow, Poland; the Dance Festival of Canary Islands in Spain; and the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in Quebec, Canada.
