EDWARDS — The first recipient of the Tony Seibert Memorial Fund will be honored this month with a full scholarship to a Level 1 Avalanche Course taught by local American Institute for Avalanche Education and Research instructors. The course includes two evening classes, Feb. 25 and 27 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., and two field classes March 1 and 2. The cost of the course is $295. The Tony Seibert Memorial Fund scholarship joins Paragon Guides and other local businesses in helping make avalanche safety affordable for all backcountry users. Additional partial and full scholarships are also available. To be considered for funding, send a 250-word essay explaining why you deserve a scholarship to firstname.lastname@example.org by Tuesday.
During the Level 1 course, students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught.
