Vail Town Council set to review I-70 underpass plan on Tuesday

VAIL — Another update on the preferred location for construction of a new Interstate 70 underpass between Main Vail and West Vail will be made to the Town Council at the March 4 evening meeting. The presentation is listed fifth on the meeting agenda, which begins at 6 p.m. in the town council chambers, with opportunities for public comment. The discussion will follow a site visit that will take place during the afternoon in which the town council will evaluate impacts from neighboring properties.

Possible Locations

After evaluating as many as 12 possible locations to connect the north and south sides of the Frontage Road, project engineers have narrowed the design options to three alignment locations. One is situated between the Savoy Villas and the Simba Run condominiums along the North Frontage Road and a few hundred yards east of the Cascade Village entrance on the South Frontage Road. The other two locations under review are situated a few hundred yards to the east and west of the first location.

Selection of a preferred location is the next step in the design process. During Tuesday’s meeting, the town council will be asked to endorse a conceptual location which will allow for the start of preliminary design. Property acquisition, drainage, retaining walls, structural bridge selection, realignment of the North Recreational Trail, traffic analysis and other factors will influence the project’s design, as well as environmental considerations related to Gore Creek, plus noise, light and air quality impacts.

Project details and updates are available on the town’s website at www.vailgov.com/underpass. To forward comments to the town council in advance of Tuesday’s discussion, email towncouncil@vailgov.com.
