Kevin Pearce to host pingpong fundraiser

VAIL — As the Burton U.S. Open rolls into Vail for its second year of competition, so does the snowboard community. Among them is Kevin Pearce, former professional snowboarder and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Pearce and his entourage, known as “frends” are hosting a fundraising pingpong tournament to bring awareness to the Kevin Pearce Fund and his Love Your Brain social movement. The event takes place on today from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Happy Valley Grill at the Vail Golf Clubhouse. Entry is $20 at the door. The evening includes pingpong, live music and a raffle, and is co-hosted by professional snowboarders Jack Mitrani and Danny Davis along with Pearce.

“Jack, Danny and I are pumped to be here in Vail for our first ever Love Your Brain frendly pingpong fundraiser,” Pearce said. “We love Vail, and we want to share the love with everyone here by challenging you to a frendly game of pingpong and by inviting you to love your brain.”

The subject of a recent HBO documentary “The Crash Reel,” Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2009, sending shockwaves through the tightknit snowboarding community and drawing an outpouring of support from fans around the world. Pearce’s well-documented recovery has inspired countless others, and Love Your Brain encourages people to make more mindful and healthier choices in their active lifestyle, specifically focused on preventing brain injuries.

The Kevin Pearce Fund was created in partnership with the Vermont Community Foundation to fund organizations supporting families who face the types of challenges the Pearce family experienced during Kevin’s recovery from his near-fatal accident. The fund has set a goal to raise $15,000 in March for the National Brain Injury Awareness Month. Today’s event marks the initial fundraising efforts and was conceived by Pearce, who cites pingpong as effective therapy for brain injuries.
