EAGLE COUNTY — The opening salvo in this year’s political wars will be fired tonight with the county caucuses.
While caucuses have taken root in Australia, Canada, and South Africa, the caucus was invented in America.
For the uninitiated, a caucus is a meeting of supporters or members of a specific political party or movement. In tonight’s case, it’s meetings of political precincts. Precincts are the smallest political districts, and it’s where grassroots politics begin to grow. All caucuses begin at 7 p.m.
Although 2014 is considered an off-year election, this one is critical, said Carole Onderdonk, of the Eagle County Democratic Party.
Republicans in the Eagle River Valley will meet at 7 p.m. in the Battle Mountain High School. The rest meet at the Burns Community Center and in the Roaring Fork Valley.
Democrats meet in four locations: the West Vail Holiday Inn, the WECMRD Fieldhouse in Edwards, the Eagle County building in Eagle, and the Eagle County building in El Jebel.
To find your precinct number, call the Eagle County Clerk and Recorders office at 970-328-8710, or go to www.eaglecounty.us/Clerk/Voting_and_Elections/2012_Precinct_Maps/.
